HUNDRENDS OF REFUGEES DROWNED IN PYLOS: A CRIME OF THE GREEK GOVERNMENT, EU AND A CONSEQUENCE OF THE IMPERIALIST WARS
Hundreds of refugees drowned in the south of Pylos, a city in Western Greece, in the early morning of Wednesday 14/6. This is yet another predetermined crime of the government and EU policy. It is a crime of violating the right to asylum, while seeking to address migrant and refugee flows with fences on land and murderous pushbacks at the sea. It is the murderous reality of Fortress Europe.
In this context, the right to asylum is considered by EU Member States only if someone has entered a country. Labelling refugees and migrants as “clandestine and enemies who violate borders” is a crime against humanity and life.
NATO countries, the US and the EU provoke and support wars and civil conflicts, plundering of natural resources and climate crises in the Middle East, Africa and elsewhere. Their actions imply mass poverty and terror, thus uprooting millions of people. Moreover and in this background, the EU anti-refugee policies force refugees to follow dangerous routes, being largely exploited by smugglers.
The New Democracy government has been gradually sharpening the Greek murderous anti-immigration policy, thereby being jointly responsible with the EU for this new crime. The intolerant treatment of refugees at the borders, the pushbacks, refugees’ confinement in island camps and their deportations are complemented by racist politics and narrative that, notably, are manifested in pre-election spots about border shielding.
We are facing yet another crime that haunts the life of the “civilized” West. It adds to the EU crimes that in 2022 alone cost the lives of at least 2,406 refugees in the Mediterranean Sea.
We Demand:
- Absolute protection and right to asylum.
- An end to the EU policy of closed borders, fences and pushbacks
- Political and democratic freedoms and rights for refugees of war and poverty
- Open borders, housing, work, health care, education, legalization, and free movement for refugees and migrants
Greek and migrant workers unite!
